A room the size of a closet that does the work of a studio.
Every sauna company sells the same photograph: steam, cedar, a view of somewhere cold and beautiful. This is the story of a company that started from a different picture.
Norway's own sauna society, the closest thing that country has to a trade body for the practice, doesn't bother showing you a product on its website. It shows you a map of where the saunas already are, because in Norway a sauna is not a thing you buy. It is a place you already know how to get to.
America doesn't have that map. What America has is a hot yoga studio on one side of town and a sauna showroom on the other, and nobody has built the thing that sits between them: a room built from the start for two bodies in motion, not two bodies sitting still.
That gap is the company. But the invention turned out to be smaller and stranger than a floor plan.

How the room got smaller
Heat rises. Every sauna builder already knows this, which is why a traditional Finnish sauna stacks its benches, hottest air at the top. Nobody had applied that same stacking logic to a room meant for yoga instead of sitting. And the floor series of a hot yoga class, the half that is mostly lying and kneeling, is exactly the half that a studio floor puts in the coldest foot of air in the building.
So the answer was not a bigger room. It was a second height.
Version one: spread out
8 × 12 ft, two platforms staggered on the diagonal. Clever, but still solving the problem by moving two people apart.
Version two: face to face
An 8 ft square, platforms facing. Closer to how the practice feels. Still a floor plan.
Version three: stacked
No floor plan at all. One room, two heights. First drawn at 6 × 8 × 8, then shrunk again to 5 × 7 × 7 so it fits under an 8 ft ceiling.
The room itself kept getting smaller as the idea got sharper. What's left is a room the size of a walk-in closet, 5 feet wide, 7 feet long, 7 feet tall, that does in that footprint what would otherwise take a studio-sized space: a full standing series, a full floor series, two people, one heater. Every version before this one was still trying to make room. This one just uses the room it already has, twice.
It is a small, almost obvious idea, which is usually the sign that nobody has done it yet, because everyone was looking at the bench and not at where the heat actually sits.
The policy accident
The second half of the story is timing, and we'd rather be precise about it than romantic.
The premium end of the American sauna market is imported. The heaters come from Finland and Estonia. A great deal of the cedar comes from Canada. In 2025 and 2026, tariffs landed on both. Most Canadian softwood lumber now enters the United States carrying antidumping and countervailing duties of about 35%, plus a 10% Section 232 lumber tariff on top, for a stack near 45% at most mills, and Western red cedar is inside that scope. Goods from the European Union, Finland and Estonia included, pay a 15% all-inclusive ceiling under the US–EU framework that took effect in July 2026.
None of that was built to help a wellness company get founded. But for a room that was going to be built domestically anyway, the imported alternative got more expensive at exactly the right moment to make the American answer the cheaper one, not just the more patriotic one. A company that can say "built in America" and "costs less than the import" in the same sentence has a pitch that doesn't lean on either claim alone.
It is a window, not a moat. Tariff rates change, and the Canadian rates are under review as we write this. We say so on every page where the claim appears, and we keep the sources on the evidence page.
What the first unit answers
A company story that only tells you what's solved is a brochure. Here is the other list.
- Nobody has bought one. The concept has been drawn and argued over; it has not yet been shown to a hot yoga practitioner or a studio for reaction. That is the very next step, and we are asking for it publicly.
- The gradient is a principle, not a measurement. Stratification is real and documented. The temperature difference between the floor and a 24-inch platform in this specific room has not been measured. The prototype gets sensors before the heater is chosen.
- The center lock is not engineered. Two bench halves that fold independently but must lock into one rigid, safe surface. It is the single highest-risk point in the design.
- The ceiling is tight for tall people. Two of thirteen standing postures fully extend overhead; they clear for most, not all. The table is an estimate until practitioners stand in the prototype.
- The price does not exist. We know what custom cedar cabins from US builders cost and what kit saunas cost, and we know the strongest comparable, a US-handcrafted seven-person sauna with flip-up benches, lists around $14,000. Our price appears when the bill of materials does.
- Tariff policy is unstable. The window that makes domestic manufacturing cheaper today can narrow before the first unit ships.
- The name needs clearance. "Hot room" is what hot yoga studios call their rooms, and there are live trademarks using it in yoga services. Counsel goes on the list before the brand goes on a product.
Who is building it
Hot Room for 2 is founded by Blaine Warkentine in Boulder, Colorado. He spent more than twenty years in orthopedic technology and health-system partnerships, including growing the orthopedic vertical at BrainLAB to $250 million, and holds patents in image-guided surgical navigation. He has an MD with deep clinical training, and he is not a practicing physician. This is not a medical device. It is a room, built by someone who has spent a career watching what happens when hardware meets a body that moves.
Every version before this one was still trying to make room. This one just uses the room it already has, twice.
